One of the oldest amateurish choirs, the students choir of St. Petersburg's State University was founded in 1920-1930s. At the break of the XX - XXI centuries the choir receives the official status of compulsory university group. It was a big male choir (up to 250 people), admission to which took place according to the contest. The choir gave 5-6 concerts a season in the Conservatory's big hall, the Nobles assembly hall, the Mikhailovsky theatre, the halls of Polytechnic Institute, the Tenishev College; it was also popular among the city's student youth.
After the opening of the Bestuzhevskiye higher female courses the choir became mixed and was able to considerably broaden its repertoire. During the pre-revolutionary years the choir directors were M. Shteinberg, G. Maykapar, A. Gauk, A. Gladovsky.
The choir's golden age of the post-war period is related to the name of Grigoriy Moiseyevich Sandler (1912-1994), graduate of the Leningrad Conservatory, the one who was restoring the choir during the post-war years. Grigoriy Moiseyevich became at the head of the choir in 1949 and worked for it during 45 years participating in more than 1,400 concerts in Moscow, Leningrad, other cities of the USSR and abroad (Finland, Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Chekoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Bulgaria). The students' choir performed with symphonic orchestras under the leadership of K. Eliasberg, N. Rabinovich, K. Zanderling, K. Kondrashin, K. Ivanov, E. Svetlanova, G. Rozhdestvensky, N. Yarvi, Yu. Temirkanov, A. Yansons, M. Yansons.
