JSC "Kirovsky Factory"

Putilovsky (Kirovsky) Factory was founded in 1801.
During the first decades of the enterprise's existence it carried out military orders and was one of the first enterprises in Russia to make steam engines. Artistic casting orders for the city (lion figures at Elagin and Mikhailovsky Palaces and on Catherine's Canal, fencing and sculptures at Anichkov Palace, etc.) were an important part of the factory's contribution to St. Petersburg during the 19th century.
One of the brightest periods in the history of the factory is associated with the name of N.I. Putilov, who owned it from 1868 till 1880. Over a short period of time the production of rails, railroad train cars and armaments has been mastered. Putilov was the man who laid the basis for multi-purpose production and created the tradition of high professionalism at the factory.
Since its foundation the history of the Kirovsky Factory has always been tied with the development of the Russian Navy. In 1911 "Novik" topredo boat, the fastest military ship of that time, has been created at the factory's dockyards.
Kirovsky Factory is Russia's leading enterprise in the area of artillery armament production. The light cannon that for many decades remained the Russian Army's main ground artillery weapon was created here. The factory made the world's first anti-aircraft cannon. In 1970-1980 "Pion" high-capacity self-propelled cannon and its modification known as "Malka", superior in shooting range to all foreign analogues, were made here.
In late 19th century building steam railroad engines became one of the enterprise's main directions of work. In 1924 the creation of the Fordzon-Putilovets laid the foundation for the Russian tractor industry. Since 1962 the mass production of Kirovets tractor, the most powerful wheel tractor in the world, became the factory's chief direction of activity.
Production of turbines, one of the enterprise's other traditional areas of work, was first organized here in 1931. Kirovsky Factory began by making turbines for electric power plants and in 1951 it became a confident leader in the production of turbine aggregates for navy ships, cargo ships, tankers and icebreakers.
The contribution of Kirovsky Factory to the restoration and strengthening of Russia's economy in the post-war period cannot be overestimated. The factory created such important machines as the KT-12 tractor for automated forrestry works and the "Penguin" universal amphibia vehicle, which palyed a significant role in the exploration of the Arctic regions.
During its entire history the factory remained a powerful arsenal of new technology for the Russian Army and Navy. In 1932 production of tanks began here. Tanks such as KV, IS and SAU, made here during World War II, played a major role in the victory of the Allies. Armored cars and tanks equipped with anti-aircraft weapons were built here in the post-war years. In 1976 T-80, the world's first tank with a gas turbine engine, was built. T-80U followed it in 1985.
On November 5, 1992 the factory was transformed into an open joint stock company and the restructuring of the enterprise began. Kirovsky Factory was the first enterprise in Russia that undertook fundamental restructuring of its entire production mechanism in 1992. On September 1, 1992, 27 self-financing complexes with independent balances and bank accounts were created instead of the complicated and inflexible management structure that existed here previously. These complexes also had all the material and financial resources needed to operate on the market independently. They were self-governed and payed taxes separately from each other.
After becoming assured of the effectiveness of these reforms, the administration of Kirovsky Factory brought them to a logical end by creating a system of daughter joint stock companies in October, 1994. 20 daughter enterprises and several other organizations were a part of JSC "Kirovsky Factory" as of June 1, 2001.
