Saint-Petersburg State Institute of precise mechanics and optics (technical university) is the Russian leader at training specialists in the field of up-to-date and unique technologies.
In 1980 the Institute, which was called Leningrad Institute of precise mechanics and optics, was awarded the order of Labour Red Banner for the achievements in training highly skilled specialists for the national economy of the country and for the development of research studies. In 1994 the Institute was given the status of a technical university, it was renamed and became Saint-Petersburg State Institute of precise mechanics and optics. At present time the head of the Institute is V.Vasiliev.
More than 6 thousand people study at the university. It trains specialists under 33 programs of higher vocational education. More than 560 lecturers work at the university, among them there are more than 440 Doctors and Candidates of Science.
The day department comprises 7 faculties, namely the Faculty of the humanities, the Faculty of natural sciences, the Engineering-physical faculty, the Faculty of information technologies and programming, the Faculty of computer technologies and control, the Faculty of optical-informational systems and technologies, the Faculty of precise mechanics and technologies.
At the university there is also an evening department, which includes different educational programs and periods of teaching. The university comprises Institute of integrated military education, which trains the officers of the Navy reserve.
The advanced students are given scholarships. The university has a hostel, athletic facilities, sports centre, situated in the Karelian isthmus.
The university is equiped with everything necessary for training and scientific-research activities. Students can work at more than 20 computer class-rooms, several automatized school laboratories, computer-aided audiovisual centres. At the university there is also a post-graduate course, 8 specialized boards of defending theses for a Doctor's and a Candidate's Degrees.
Saint-Petersburg centre of the Federal University Computer network of Russia RUNNet (the largest Russian scientific-educational network) is situated in the university. By means of the centre the network RUNNet is connected with international service-providers.
In 2000 the group of authors under the guidance of the head of the university professor V.Vasiliev was awarded the Russian Federation Government Prize for elaborating scientific and organizational essential principles and creation the federal university computer network RUNNet for institutes of higher education.
The special educational project of the university chooses talented young people and teaches them. More than 100 students of the university are prize-winners at city school and student competitions in mathematics, physics, computer graphics, among them there are 25 All-Russian and International competition winners. In 1996 the group of university students became programming-champion in Russia and silver medallist of the world's programming-championship in 2000.
