Lihachyov, Dmitry Sergeevich

    Full Member of the Russian Academy of Science.
    Born on 28th (15th) November 1906 in Saint Petersburg.
    Graduated in Social Science from the Leningrad State University in 1928.
    From 1928 - 1932 he was wrongfully subjected to repression and exited to camps Solovetsk and Belomor-Baltica.
    From 1938, he worked as a research assistant at the Russian Literary Institute, part of the USSR Academy of Science.
    In 1954, he became Head of the department of The Ancient Russian Literature at the Russian Literary Institute.
    In 1941, he defended his dissertation on the theme "Novgorod annalistic codes of the 12th century".
    In 1947, he defended his doctoral dissertation on the theme "Studies in the History of Chronicle Literary Forms of the 12th-14th Centuries".
    In 1953 became an Associate member of the Russian Academy of Science and since 1970, he has been a Full Member.
    A well-known scientist, the author of a wide range of basic works in the field of Russian Literature (mostly Ancient Russian Literature) and Russian Culture.
    He is the author of hundreds of works on a broad range of problems concerning Russian Literature Theory and History. Most of them have been translated into English, Bulgarian, Italian, Polish, Serbo-Croatian, Czech, French, Spanish, Chinese and German.
    The author of 500 research works and about 600 publicistic works.
    An Honorary member of The Bulgarian and Hungarian Academies of Science and The Serbian Academy of Arts.
    An Associate Member of Academics in Austria, America, Britain and Italy, of Gettingen Academy and the oldest society in the USA -The Philosophy Society.
    Since 1956 Member of the Writers' Union.
    In 1983 became Chairman of the Pushkin Committee at the Russian Academy of Science.
    In 1974 became a head of the educational staff on the yearbook "Monuments of Culture. New discoveries."
    From 1971 to 1993, he was a head of the editorial staff for a series of books "Monuments of Literature."
    Since 1987, he has been a member of the editorial staff
    on "New World" magazine and since 1988-"Our Heritage" magazine.
    In 1986 he founded The Soviet (now Russian) Culture Foundation and was its Chairman until 1993.
    In 1990 became a member of the International Committee of organizing the Alexandria Library in Egypt.
    From 1961 to 1962 and from 1987 to 1989 he was a Deputy of Leningrad Council.
    A Member of the Human Rights Committee of the Administration of Saint Petersburg.
    From 1989 to 1991, he was People's Deputy from the Soviet Foundation of Culture.
    In 1986, he was awarded Hero of Socials Labour.
    Awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour (1966), Bulgarian Kirill and Mephody Order (1963, 1977) and various medals.
    Awarded the "Amber Cross" Order (1977) by the Russian Academy of Arts.
    Awarded an Honorary Diploma of Saint Petersburg Legislative Counsel (1996).
    The First Honorary Citizen of Saint Petersburg (1993).
    An Honorary Citizen of Milan and Arezzo.
    Small planet ¹ 2877 was given the name "Likhachyov" in 1984.
    Married with daughter.
