    Born January 27, 1936 in Leningrad into a family of the theatrical director Gakkel E.G.
    Graduated from the Leningrad Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatory in piano-playing and then finished his PhD on "History and Theory of piano-playing".
    Doctor of Art Criticism Professor of the St.-Petersburg Conservatory.
    Author of the books and pubticistic works in History of piano- playing, and in actual problems of modern musical life. Often works for radio and television, and in newspapers in Moscow and St.-Petersburg.
    Member of the Union of Composers. Honourary Russian Worker of Arts., an Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts.
    Married with two children.
