Zaytsev Vladimir Nikolaevich
Director, the Russian National Library.
Born on December 8, 1938, in Engels, Sartovskaya Oblast, in a family of workers. Graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Textile and Light Industry named after S.M. Kirov, Candidate of Technical Sciences. Graduated from the Academy of Social Sciences.
Since 1985 - Director of the Russian National Library.
The author of more than 60 works on library science, actively participated in development of two federal laws - "About Library Science" and "About a Compulsory Copy of Documents", which were adopted by the State Duma in 1994. Initiator of most important projects and programs facilitating a professional library movement consolidation - President of the Russian Libraries Association, established in 1994 on his initiative. A member of the Coordinating Board of the Eurasia Library Assembly, Chairman of the permanent library commission of the Russian Creative Union of Culture Workers.
Due to Zaytsev's active work, the Russian National Library has expanded professional contacts with world's librarians, first of all with the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), in work of which he participates since 1986. Zaytsev is a member of UNESCO national committee for the program "World's Memory", Head of the European Scientific Libraries Consortium.
Zaytsev is Academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, the International Academy of Ecology, Human and Nature Safety, the Academy of Inventions, Professor of the St. Petersburg State University of Culture.
Zaytsev is a member of Culture Council under President of the Russian Federation.
Honoured Culture Worker of Russia.
Awarded with the Pushkin's Medal, the Medal of Academician Kapitsa.
Married, has a daughter, a son and a grandson.
When questioned about favorite way to spend his free time, always answers "work, work and work". If you happen to pass a dark sleeping building of the Russian National Library, located at the corner of Nevsky Prospect and Sadovaya Street, late at night, you are sure to see two lit windows on the first floor. This is a Director's study. Director is working.
