St. Petersburg Federal Postal Services Board
In 1999 St. Petersburg's postal services have marked their 285th anniversary.
Postal services grew and developed as the city itself was growing and developing. In the early 18th century no special postal organization existed and "sending mail" meant sending a messenger on a postal horse. Both official and private deliveries were done this way. But in 1714 already a Post Office was created in St. Petersburg by Peter I and a special "correct mail passage" was set up on the routes to Moscow and Riga.
In the building of the first Post Office, located in 1714 near the present-day Suvorov Square, next to the Martial Ground, mail was collected, sorted and sent out for delivery. During the 1730's and 40's regular delivery of private packages (the so-called "heavy mail") was organized. Since 1746 packages and private letters were delivered to homes.
In the 19th century the postal system in St. Petersburg continued to develop actively, offering new services to clients. In 1838 deliveries of periodicals started here for the first time in Russia. In 1848 first mail collection boxes have been installed on St. Petersburg streets. In 1958 first postal stamps began to be issued in Russia. In the second half of the 19th century such services as deliveries of publications, catalogues and small packages abroad, subscriptions to periodicals and money transfers continued to develop at St. Petersburg Post Office.
Today St. Petersburg's postal services consist of 8,000 workers employed by the Federal Postal Services Board and of 295 post offices that are a part of 12 district postal units. They service all 23 districts of the city. Post offices process over 6 tons of written correspondence daily. Mail is processed 24 hours a day. Over 1,500 persons are occupied with deliveries. Besides post offices, three major mail processing and delivery centers are a part of St. Petersburg's postal service system. These include the Main Post Office, the Railroad Office and the Automobile Base: one of the largest auto enterprises in the city.
The list of basic services offered by St. Peterburg postal system today consists of over 90 items. The full list of services is a catalogue that takes up dozens of pages.
Workers of St. Petersburg Federal Postal Services Board see their task in searching for new technical and organizational solutions that will further improve postal communications.
